Un-burying the Wall, and the old Resorts and Scenery

The back property line is where they piled old brush and rocks. Over the years, everything became tangled in overgrowth.  The rock wall was hardly visible underneath! Until July 7.

Below is a shot partway through the task of cutting and pulling out brush and rocks.  I spread the cuttings over the lawn, then shred them by running them over with the riding mower.

Below is where I left off for now.  The ground still slopes upward to the wall. The plan is to level the area off and plant wild flowers.

Willow Manor, seen above, is one of as many as 32 resorts in East Haddam in the early 1900s.  Willow Manor closed as a resort in the 1960s. But, the buildings still can be seen today because it seems the family still keeps up the grounds.  Most of the resorts closed gradually after air travel became more and more popular.

Willow Manor today. More cottages and the pond are off to the left.

and back then...........

Looking down 151 from Willow Manor. The meadow behind my yard is to the left.

A mile further is Cave Hill Resort. Cave Hill is still in business, although sadly I have yet to see it very busy.

Last weekend after a grocery run, I had to stop for the drawbridge, the East Haddam Bridge over the Connecticut River.  The bridge rotates to pass sailboats.

The closer part of the bridge stays in place. Below, can you see the far part starting to rotate counter-clockwise?

Below you can see the graceful span halfway open.

An exterior paint color being tested. The purplish gray is called Smoked Oyster.

Below, is a shelf I built in above the door between kitchen and dining room, last winter.

early July colors!

After a colorful summer evening drive to photograph the resorts, I explored some other roads. Here's looking over a hollow viewed from a cemetery off North Moodus Road.  The vines relentlessly look for anything to wrap around!
